from "Gringo's Tour of Mazatlan

En Domingo

On the seventh day, in Mazatlan

the day of Domingo, even in

a changing world of techno

techno, there remained plenty

of old world religion, unseen

except within Cathedral doors

not held out for all to witness

as a daughter's bloody garment

hung on a line, a father's badge

of honor, another in the family's

distant history, the latest of

which gather along the sand on Sabalo beach,

with baskets of food from yesterday's labor

and igloos of ice and blankets

and chairs

umbrellas coloring the backdrop of sand

niños spread sumptuously thick

and everywhere, dragging others

into the cool of the surf,

this day of Domingo, when

the people of Mazatlan come

to their beach on the bay

to smell the breeze of

generations, and say hello

to all the turistas

strolling on the beach

of the ancients
