Grant Handgis ~ Author/Poet

from “In The Age of Youth”

The Double Reflective

The runny nose of the child

said of him what he would not

that his tousled hair was not a misery

of his own, but natural, like lifting up the unwashed hands

to search the reedy jacket of a hundred buttons

for a likely pocket, reaching for treasure

in a magical world of pirates, digging for chew

on the porch of a saloon in a forgotten cow town, and

finding the wistful bit of bread, crumbling

in the brown stained fingers, the cookie

like the smile, was not lost

for nothing is wasted in innocence
