Grant Handgis ~ Author/Poet

from “In The Age of Youth”

Give Us This Day

My children are hungry, again

but this time has no more significance

than the days gone before

when all there was to offer them

were the rice cakes, what few remained

in their putrid state, waded

soggy in the bowl, once filled with herb

grown by our hands, in the rich fields

left scarred by the deep wounds of battle

as a hideous reminder of conquest, and

the youth smile no more

nor sing the lyrics of Spring

but march off to the weight of war

where the sounds of death reverberates from the mountains

obstructing the sun, and choking the breath from the soul

and the children of this land return again to the earth
